What Is a Total Body Skin Exam?
A Total Body Skin Exam is a comprehensive evaluation of your skin from head to toe,performed by one of our experienced dermatology providers. During the exam, we carefullyinspect your skin for:
- Atypical or changing moles
- New or unusual growths
- Signs of sun damage
- Suspicious lesions that may indicate skin cancer (such as melanoma, basal cellcarcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma)
We use specialized tools such as dermatoscopes to get a closer look at concerning spots,improving the accuracy of diagnosis.
Who Should Get a Skin Exam?
Everyone can benefit from routine skin exams, but we especially recommend them forindividuals who:
- Have a personal or family history of skin cancer
- Have numerous or atypical moles
- Have fair skin, light eyes, or a history of sunburns
- Spend significant time outdoors or use tanning beds
- Notice any new, changing, or non-healing spots on their skin
For high-risk patients, we may recommend exams every 6to 12 months. Others maybenefit from a yearly check-up.
What to Expect During Your Visit
A TBSE is performed in a private, respectful environment. You’ll be asked to undress andwear a gown so your provider can carefully inspect all areas of your skin—including areasnot typically exposed to the sun, such as the scalp, back, and soles of the feet. We takeyour comfort and privacy seriously, and you’re always welcome to ask questions orrequest a chaperone.
If anything unusual is found, we may recommend a biopsy—a quick, in-office procedure todetermine whether the spot is benign, precancerous, or cancerous.
